Why would I choose a Havanese?
This is a good question and one that should be pondered. Although (to me) they are the cutest dog around, they are not the dog for everyone. These are dogs bred for companionship, and do not thrive without companionship of their own. They want to be with their family, and not in the outdoors as an outside dog, not even in the other room if you are there. They love to be beside you cuddling and loving, and often keeping your lap warm. Havanese are very sad without this companionship, and can become anxious if left alone too much.
So, if you are the kind of person who appreciates this, you might want to consider a Havanese. But wait, there’s more. Havanese also need grooming. It is not an all day job, but you do need to spend about 10 minutes daily coming and brushing. If you don’t, you pay at the end of the week when all the 10 minute periods have added up to an hour.
Also, if you want a good Havanese, you should not expect to get one at bargain basement prices. The low end pricing usually indicates puppy mills. Unfortunately, puppy mills do not give a hoot about socialization, so the puppy you get from them will not have had any real contact with many humans or other animals. They can be fearful their whole lives as a result of improper beginnings. If you want to good puppy that is socialized well, and produced from quality health tested parents, you have to pay for it. The responsible breeder, let me tell you, has put lots of money into this endeavor in order to provide you with the best puppy you can expect to get.
